Thank you so much to everyone who commented on my blog yesterday – and thank you to the editor for letting me have the honor of being Freshly Pressed! It made my day! 🙂

The Zen of Social Media Marketing

Yesterday was a rainy day, so I sat down with this amazing yellow book and actually took notes while reading. Author Shama Hyder Kabani does an excellent job explaining three major social media websites (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and how to use them to build up and market your business. I picked up this book at the library because I’m currently looking for a job related to publishing and nowadays social media is being used more and more to get the word out about books and authors. It’s also a great way for aspiring authors to create a platform (an absolute necessity for getting published).

Kabani’s book is a great guide for these reasons:

1. It’s extremely user-friendly. There isn’t too much technical jargon or confusing concepts and everything’s explained well.

2. It’s got pictures for those of us who are more visually-oriented.

3. The information is constantly being updated online; that’s a very important quality for books to have these days, especially with the fleeting nature of social media.

4. It’s short (186 pages), so you can read it in one rainy day, or at least get a good chunk of it finished during a lunch break.

5. There are case studies in the back that prove social media can have real-world applications. (Lots of people are skeptical about its usefulness.)

I also like that the author doesn’t come across as arrogant. Humility is a beautiful thing.

  1. Using social media tools to connect with prospective customers and clients makes sense . . . as long as you’re not simultaneously using them to share the “intimate” details of your life.

    What happens is that people mix “business” with “pleasure” and scare customers and clients away in the process.

    • Yes, there are a lot of people out there who find it difficult to separate their private lives from their business lives; social media’s really blurring those lines. Thanks for the link – I’ll be looking at it soon! 🙂
