The Trenches of Revision, Part II

I managed to accomplish my January revision goal – I now have a detailed outline of PETER. I know what I want out of the story, I know my characters better, and I’ve filled in some plot holes. I also learned the difference between urban fantasy and paranormal romance, which used to confuse me to no end!

For February I’m working on the sequel to PETER, tentatively titled JACOB. I’m going to work on it pretty much the same way I worked on PETER, but JACOB will hopefully be a bit easier, since I know the setting, the basic premise, and my POV character.

What’s been hardest for me so far is calming the urge to rush through these revisions. I keep reminding myself that revision and rewriting require a lot of patience and rushing is ironically only going to make things go more slowly. I keep reminding myself that I’m only getting ready to write second drafts. There’s a lot that could change and evolve during the course of revision. It’s made even more difficult when people ask, “When’s your book going to be published?”

I don’t know – and honestly, I really don’t care. I’m having fun writing and revising it. I think that I’ll know if and when my book is ready for publication, but I do know that it’s definitely not going to be this year or even the year after this one. For now, I’ll take my time, be patient, and enjoy the journey instead of rushing toward the end.

  1. There is indeed something magical about starting the second novel using some–if not all–of the characters of the first one. Being able to further develop someone who you’ve come to know from months of work does seem easier. This time you are refining, not creating of whole cloth. It allows you to put more effort into the supporting and incidental cast and plot bits.

Good luck with this. I trust you will continue to enjoy the journey.

  2. Good work!

Having patience when revising can be difficult. I’m slowly plowing ahead with mine. Sometimes I just want to move on to writing my next book. Knowing that it will be a long time before the revisions are complete makes the task a bit daunting. But I’m trying to take it one step at a time.

    Good luck with both books!
