I decided that I’m going to do the 30 Day Book Challenge, so here’s the topic for Day 1:
The Best Book You Read Last Year
Well, let’s see… I have to go digging through my LibraryThing…
It was a pretty hard decision, but I chose I’ll Take You There by Joyce Carol Oates.
I would consider it the best book I had read in 2010 mainly because I was able to identify so much with the main character, who went by “Anellia.” Joyce Carol Oates has the ability to take her readers right inside a character’s head and fool them into believing that the character actually exists and is living somewhere in real life.
The book is essentially a coming-of-age story; Anellia is a poor, Jewish college student living in a sorority house with girls she has nothing in common with. She’s extremely intelligent, but also shy and socially awkward. She meets up with Vernor, an older philosophy student, and they end up in a relationship that is devoid of true affection. The book takes place in the early 1960s and Anellia’s lover is black, but he tries to keep himself out of the civil rights movement as much as possible. Anellia and Vernor break up, and eventually Anellia has to go back home to take care of some family problems. It is then that the novel comes together and Anellia starts to grow up and come out of her shell.
If you’re into introspective literary novels, I’d recommend it.
