Today’s prompt: A book that makes you sad
Actually, every book by Steinbeck that I’ve read makes me sad, but The Grapes of Wrath had me crying and there’s not very many books that can bring me to tears. Why did it make me sad? Because, even though it’s fiction, it’s based on a historical event and its main characters, the Joad family, are realistic people. When I read about something that did happen or could happen, it becomes quite tangible to me. The detail in the book is a reminder that yes, the Great Depression is not as far in the past as it seems and could very well happen again. Even today, people all over the world are starving and a lot of our food supply and other resources are wasted. The book is like a reality check. Unlike a lot of other classic books, this one is written in a style that’s straightforward, but beautiful in its simplicity.
I would recommend this if you want to read something that might make you cry, but will more likely make you ponder the state of America as it was then and as it is now.
