30 Day Book Challenge – Day 12

Today’s Prompt: A book you used to love, but don’t anymore

When I read the first volume of the Harry Potter series, I was enthralled. I read every book as it came out and enjoyed them thoroughly, but I can’t say I really enjoy them anymore. Perhaps it’s because Harry Potter is technically a children’s series and I’m not a child anymore, but I think it’s more than that.

It might be because of all the hype that surrounds the books. Unlike the Twilight series, Harry Potter deserves all the popularity and accolades that it has gotten, but for some odd reason, I tend not to like things that are so well-known. To some extent, watching the movies turned me off because certain things were not as I had pictured them in my head as I read.

  1. I read the series as an adult an loved it.

I enjoyed the first movie the best . . . because it helped me to see Hagrid and Hogwarts and Moving Staircases and Quidditch.

I’ve known people who were like that about bands. If they liked a small indie band and then suddenly the band had a huge hit, they’d start to think that maybe the band wasn’t that good after all. 🙂

I kind of felt that way about The King’s Speech. I enjoyed it for what it was when I saw it (it was our “family movie night” for Christmas), but I was annoyed when it won the Best Picture Oscar. If that was the best picture of the year, then things are in bad shape.

This bothered some people about the Lord of the Rings movies. I’m a fan of the books, but think some of the changes in the plot were improvements. Some weren’t, of course, but that’s the way it goes.

    1. If they had kept every little detail in the Harry Potter movies, then they all would have had to be split up into two movies each. Glad they didn’t do that!
