Today’s Prompt: A book that disappointed you
Robert Goolrick’s A Reliable Wife was pretty disappointing for me. It just didn’t measure up to all the hype that surrounded it.
The language of the book was beautiful at first, but after the first few pages it felt overwrought. None of the characters were sympathetic and each could have made amends to their lives instead of wallowing in self-pity. There were many, many elaborately written sex scenes – part of what turned me off. All the characters ever seemed to think about was sex, which took away from the weak plot of the story.
The book also has more 1-star ratings on Amazon than anything else, so apparently I’m not the only one who has these feelings about the book. I wouldn’t recommend it, unless you want to read what’s essentially an overwritten soap opera.
Have you read it? What did you think?
