Poetry Time: “Firecracker”

OK, I know today is nowhere near the Fourth of July, but for some reason, I felt like posting this poem.

break my back
for you
if i was brave
enough, if i had
the loud, gaudy
exuberance of a
crackle like
cellophane to
get attention,
blow pretty colors
up in the air
and scream, whistle
until you oohed and
aahed at me.
break my back with
a little light,
a little criticism.
do it long enough
and i’ll be the girl,
the firecracker
who would break
her back – the
one who would fade
away into the black
like a shade of smoke
to be forgotten.
