Worldbuilding Progress

…is not going well at all, mostly because XIII is doing what it always does and is taking over my brain. The parts of my brain that aren’t overtaken by XIII are overtaken by work, so when I get a slice of time that could be used for worldbuilding, I use it for reading or sleeping instead. Oh, well. C’est la vie.

The other issue I have with worldbuilding is that I tend to get overwhelmed by just how many elements there are in a world that either need to be created or redefined or made consistent. Being overwhelmed can paralyze you into inaction, and that’s what happens with me a lot. There are so many things I could do that I don’t know where to start, so I don’t start at all.

I feel as though I need to make a definite game plan, do a little each day, and try to stick to a schedule. Scheduling usually makes me feel better about being overwhelmed. Or maybe… I’ll wait until I’m finally finished with XIII… whenever that happens. 🙂

So… have you ever been lost in your own world?

  1. Maggie,
I know exactly what you mean! I find that when I’m at work, my brain comes up with a crystal clear idea of the writing I plan to do when I get home. Then, when I get home, I can’t figure out where to start, so I don’t. It’s very frustrating!
I break my writing goals down into smaller sections, then I while away the evening trying to decide which of the smaller sections I want to write – and end up writing nothing.
    I feel your pain 🙂

  2. Yes, Maggie. The only thing I’ve been able to produce lately are a few lousy journal pages. It’s been that way for a month, or more. Lost in…other stuff. Life stuff. But I remember when I used to write…used to work on my book…

    Hang in there 🙂

  3. Channel your inner Tolkien! He wrote stories constantly about his world. I like to write short stories, unrelated to my story characters but telling about the world. Why a particular pub came to be, the history behind a migration of people over a mountain range, mythology, etc. Just things to flush out the world.
