Here’s a good WordPress Daily Prompt:
If you could wake up tomorrow and be fluent in any language you don’t currently speak, which would it be? Why? What’s the first thing you do with your new linguistic skills?
This is foolish, but the first language that came into my head was Latin. Back in middle school and early high school, I learned a lot of Latin and Greek roots. That was one of the few lessons from school that I actually remember and apply in everyday life. Nine times out of ten, if I see an unfamiliar word and think back to those Latin and Greek roots, I can figure out the meaning of the word. Being fluent in Latin would likely help me understand the Romance languages, and if I could travel back in time to the pre-Vatican II era, I could understand the old-school Latin Mass.
But for more practical purposes, it would be nice to be fluent in Spanish because so many people in my neck of the woods speak it. The first thing I’d do with it? Write a story in Spanish. That would be fun. I tried to do that in high school and didn’t get very far, so it’d be good to fulfill that farfetched dream. 🙂
