Off to a Good Start

As I typed that subject line, I knocked on wood. 🙂

This year’s NaNoWriMo is a little different in that I am attempting to write in third person present tense, unlike everything else I write, which is usually third person past tense. I’m not succeeding in keeping to present tense because I sink back into the past without realizing it until I’m halfway down the page. But who cares about that? The story is progressing nicely. *Knocks on wood again.*

The working title is MARK because I usually name my stories after male biblical characters and try to put some kind of allegory in, no matter how loose. Here’s the description I put on the NaNoWriMo website:

“After her victory over the Internet in 2007, Abbye’s life has plateaued. But demons from her past rise up again when her cousin Penny is taken hostage by an old enemy. Abbye has nowhere to turn but toward Marco, a self-described ‘graceless paintballer’ who lets her in on a secret that just might save Penny’s life.”

As I was writing, I realized that the rougher the draft, the closer to real-life events it is, but with this story, none of the characters are based off people I know in real life, so it’s a little less autobiographical. This is both restrictive and freeing, in that I have to make more stuff up off the top of my head, but I can also write whatever the heck I want and not worry about whether it would fit within the realm of reality. The story is also about an alternate universe, so I have to remind myself that it doesn’t have to be totally realistic.

How’s your NaNo going?
