Only 48 Days Till NaNoWriMo

The time has come for the nonstop onslaught of NaNoWriMo-related posts! (Well, on this blog it may not be as much of an onslaught as on some others’ blogs, but regardless, this is the beginning of the “NaNo season.”)

This will be my ninth time participating in NaNo, and I get the feeling it will possibly be the most difficult. In past years, I said I would actually attend one of the write-ins, but I have never gone, purely out of shyness/social anxiety. My other excuse is that the write-ins are all too far away and I already drive enough as it is. But I’m getting tired of making excuses, so I figure I might as well try to make it to at least one (just one won’t kill me—it might even make me stronger).

The real factor that will make this NaNoWriMo difficult is not necessarily that I’m going to force myself to go to a write-in. It’s that I realized that I have only one more story left to write to complete the time frame in my existing series. In effect, I have only the last piece of the puzzle left, and I first have to find it, then hammer it into place (oops, mixed metaphor).

So I spent a couple hours on Sunday looking at my list of WiPs and determining how the events of one flow into the events of the next. That can get confusing and time consuming because I don’t write the stories in chronological order. For example, the one I’m writing now takes place in 1999/2000, and the one I’m planning to write for NaNo will take place in 2010, so that’s 10 years’ worth of events to reconcile, and I have to ask myself what happened to each of the characters in those 10 years.

I’ll probably end up doing what I always do and just write the story without very much planning at all (probably only a skimpy half-outline) then tell myself I’ll make it all make sense later. 🙂

Do you have any plans for NaNo yet?
